It's all the talk in the business world. The possibility of a recession upcoming had been predicted and discussed endlessly. The buzz has gotten so big that the recessionary talk has even made the top story in the mainstream media quite a lot of late. While you watch these stories you more than likely have wondered at times, what exactly would a recession mean to me? I wanted to personalize the recession talk a little bit and speak to how the recession could impact your life.![]()
The one that is discussed most here and can hurt a lot of people is the loss in their personal investment accounts, and even more importantly their retirement portfolios. The stock market doesn't deal well with uncertainty combined with no growth and a recession brings that about.
The place where the most people feel some sort of impact likely is at their place of employment. In a recession many jobs are lost, and if your company is financial trouble, your job could certainly be one of them. If you are fortunate enough to keep your job though, you may well notice that you are being asked to take a significant amount of increased reponsibilities to compensate for layoffs or less hiring in your company. Sometimes workers are even forced to either take a pay cut or be laid off. Employment is the thing most commonly affected by a recession.
In the long run, you could also be affected in a positive way from the recessionary pressures if you are able to withstand the other pains. How could this be so? Often in recessions the Federal Reserve lowers interest rates and you can profit greatly from refinancing of a mortgage. Tax cuts are also sometimes used as a stimulus, and those obviously put more in your pocket.
It isn't clear yet if the U.S. is in a recession now or not, but whenever the next recession comes, prepare yourself for these consequences and benefits so that you are ahead of the game.
