Top mutual fund managers and how to use them when picking stocks

Knowing who the top mutual fund managers are can benefit an investor in so many ways. Obviously investors like to invest in mutual funds where the very best mutual fund managers are at the helm. We like to be with managers who have proven themselves to be worthy of our investment.

It's also important to know who the top mutual fund managers are so that you can track their individual stock ideas and use those picks as ideas for your portfolio. It amazes me how so few investors look at the largest holdings in the top mutual funds to get an idea of what a great manager is buying. This information is very public and available to everyone, take advantage of it. Having said all that, I wanted to put together a list of some of the most trusted mutual fund managers currently on wall street.

1. Bob Smith- The manager of PRGFX. Smith likes to stick to stocks with pricing power and believes in large cap growth names. He has a tremendous record of outperformance over all time frames.

2. Dave Williams- The manager of UMBIX. Dave's fund was a member of our top 5 large cap value funds list. The fund has consistently ranked in the top 10% of all large cap value funds. Williams looks for companies on the rebound from difficult times. His fund has an annualized gain of 14% over the past decade.

3. Bruce Berkowitz- The manager of FAIRX. This manager is a close follower of Warren Buffet and his ideas. He manages a very concentrated portfolio of about 25 stocks, and is not afraid to use cash. Berkowitz has proven that the concentrated fund does not have to be the overly risky fund. His fund is part of our lowest expense mutual funds list.

4. Bill Miller- The manager of LMOPX. Miller is famous for his 15 year run of bill%20miller-%20legg%20mason.jpgbeating the S&P 500, that finally ended last year. Miller considers himself a very  independent thinker. Miller has great amounts of experience and can be trusted to beat the market consistently.

5. Kenneth Heebner- The manager of CGMFX. Heebner has delivered awesome returns at CGMFX ranking in the top 1% of all mutual funds in both a 3 and 5 year period. He is as decisive as they come and his funds have been among the very best since the turn of the century. He was featured in Kiplinger in May for his savvy.

These five mutual fund managers have proven to be in the cream of the crop on wall street. Next time you are about to buy a new stock, research what these guys have been doing and try to take a cue from them.
