Alternative Investments - I Need Your Help

I will be hosting the Carnival of Investing on September 11, 2006.  I hope it will be a themed Carnival.  I would like the theme to be "Alternative Investments for the Individual Investor."  I need your help.

Please tell me about any alternative investments you may have.  These include things like real estate including office buildings, apartments, etc., commodities, hedge funds or anything that isn't just a stock or bond.  Tell me if you like it, what kind of return you are earning, how you found it and what percent of your portfolio it represents.

I will be writing some on Alternative Investments to add to the Carnival and would like to include your experience and ideas.

Well, what are you waiting for?  Leave a comment!

Long-short mutual funds offer retail investors excellent opportunities to diversify into alternatives.

Following is a link listing the funds in Morningstar's 'long short' category:

My firm manages the TFS Market Neutral Fund which is included in this list. It is a no-load product. Details on its performance are described at:

Thanks Rich. What do you personally own? Does your firm make you invest in your own fund or do they prevent it? Do you own any alternative investments that are not funds?

Larry,

TFS' internal policies currently require that at least 50% of each of the TFS owners' liquid assets is invested in the hedge funds and mutual funds managed by TFS. Currently, I have much more than that in our funds.

I currently do not invest in any alternatives besides those managed by TFS.

By the way, what is a Carnival of Investing?

Rich

Carnivals are a grouping of blogs authors have written on the same subject. There are blog carnivals all over the web. In the Carnival of Investing, all of the authors submit their favorite blog of the week to a central location. The host organizes them, adds commentary if he wishes and posts links to all the blogs.

Carnivals allow people interested in a subject to find alot of information and opinion about it quickly in one location.
