Bloomberg in an article by Ryan Mills reports on June 29, 2006 that the World Cup will make about 4.7% more than forecast from ticket sales and is likely to be profitable overall.
Ticket sales to the 64 matches look to reach € 450 million ($564 million). 2.93 million tickets were available for sale. Revenue from sponsors is $600 million, and the balance of the $3 billion in revenue comes from TV, Radio and other media sales. The anticipated total TV audience is 30 million viewers.
That's remarkable growth for a tournament that in 1982 had revenue of just $8.27 million. Kudos to FIFA President Sepp Blatter and his staff who have engineered this amazing feat. That's annual growth of 27.84% or 167.06% growth per tournament.
