Unless you have been in a coma, you are probably aware that the World Cup Football (soccer for the USA speaking group) tournament is underway. For the last two years, teams have been competing to qualify for the tournament. This is one of the largest sporting events in the world and produces enormous revenues for the media and prestige for the sponsoring countries.
Can you invest in this phenomenon? Aside from wagering it is hard to invest directly in the tournament. You can invest indirectly by buying or shorting shares of the media companies depending on whether you believe advertising will prove a boom or a bust. You could also invest in the sponsoring companies - the sporting goods suppliers, etc.
Players for the national teams come from professional clubs around the world. Can you invest in the teams the players belong to? The answer is yes and no. Many of the professional football clubs are sponsored by their communities and are not publicly traded companies. Teams in the USA and in the UK tend to be the most investable as they are organized companies, have audited financial statements and many of them trade on stock exchanges.
Have fun watching the games and don't get caught by your boss.
